Our Books

In 2011, my co-author, Sean Platt, and I decided the timing was never better for us to write our brand of serialized fiction. For the first time in history, thanks largely to Amazon and its Kindle device/app, authors were able to find and build their own audiences without having to go through traditional publishing channels.

A few years ago, there was no way a traditional publisher would take on a serial, much less a serial from a couple of unknown authors.

Now, everything has changed.

Inspired by Stephen King’s The Green Mile, and our favorite serialized TV shows, LOST, The Wire, Breaking Bad, Battlestar Galactica, Carnivale, Fringe, and a host of other shows, in 2011 we kicked off our post-apocalyptic serial, Yesterday’s Gone.

It did okay. But we knew the only way to really make a splash in the world of serialized fiction, we’d have to go all out.

We aim to be the HBO, AMC, or Showtime of the Kindle Generation, with the kind of character-driven stories, and WTF cliffhangers you’re used to seeing on the best of serialized TV.

In 2012, we decided we’d work pretty much nonstop in order to publish a book per week.

Just like TV, we create our work in weekly episodes, with six episodes per season. We then release the seasons in one low-priced volume. So you can choose to follow along on the weekly ride or wait until the full season is released and read it as a standard series type book.

Since January 10, we’ve done exactly that with a mix of new episodes, Season compilations, and our Twilight Zone-inspired Dark Crossings short stories (and collections), we’ve done exactly that.

In September, Amazon Publishing’s 47North contacted us, based on the success we’ve had with Yesterday’s Gone and asked us to create and write two new serials for their Amazon Serials program.

We said hell yeah!

We’ve now released a total of six serialized series, all of which will be seeing new seasons in 2013!

Here’s a list of books we’ve released to date.

On October 15 at 2:15 a.m. everyone on Earth went missing.

Well, almost everyone.

A scattered few woke alone in a world where there are no rules other than survival… at any cost.

A journalist wanders the horrible reality of an empty New York in search of his wife and son.

A serial killer must hunt in a land where prey is now an endangered species.

A mother shields her young daughter from danger, though every breath fills her with terror.

A bullied teen is thrilled to find everyone gone. Until the knock at the door.

A fugitive survives a fiery plane crash. Will he be redeemed, or return to what he’s best at: the kill?

An eight year old boy sets out on a journey to find his missing family. What he finds will change him forever.

And there’s a few people who aren’t surprised that this happened at
all. In fact, they’ve been dreaming about this day for years.

These survivors aren’t alone…

Someone or something is watching them.

And waiting…

Strangers unite.

Sides are chosen.

Will humanity survive what it never saw coming?

The only certainty is that Yesterday’s Gone.

You’ve never read anything like Yesterday’s Gone – the epic, groundbreaking serial.

Dark Crossings Volume 2 coverFrom the writers of “Yesterday’s Gone” and “WhiteSpace”, comes the second installment of short stories with killer endings! “Dark Crossings Volume 2” contains six short stories previously published as single short stories, now collected here for the first time in one volume.

Included are six short stories (at nearly 64,000 words) and Author Notes, including:

Are We There Yet  Jay Stephens is a philanderer on his way to meet a lover. When he runs into some roadwork, he realizes he’s gonna be late. Fortunately, he has his trusty voice-activated GPS system, April.

April is reliable, has a sexy British accent, and has always helped him get to where he’s going . . . until now.

Jay is about to take an unexpected detour from reality and into the dark realms of “Dark Crossings.”

If You Don’t Finish Reading This, Everyone You Know Will Die —  Anthony has OCD. He’s convinced that if he doesn’t give into his compulsions, bad things will happen to those around him.

His doctor proposes that Anthony avoid giving into his compulsions in order to prove that Anthony’s fears are without substance.

But what if they’re not?

Anthony is about to take an unexpected detour from reality and into the dark realms of “Dark Crossings.”

What Would Boricio Do? — Boricio Wolfe abides by only two rules:

1) Always use the best ingredients when cooking.

2) Don’t shit where you eat.

The only way a serial killer can keep a (somewhat) normal life is to stick to the rules — especially the second one. Boricio has finally found a job that doesn’t make him homicidal, and is working his way to working in the restaurant of his dreams. All he has to do is keep out of trouble and impress Mr. Jules, a man who owns some of the best restaurants in the state.

And Boricio is on the fast track to being a top chef… if he just sticks to the rules. But how long can Boricio stick to those rules when a young kid with an abusive father comes into his restaurant, just begging to be killed?

Because nothing sets Boricio off quite like abusive fathers.

Should he turn a blind eye?

Should he just leave well enough alone?

Or should he give the kid an early Christmas gift and kill his prick of a father?

Hide and Seek — It’s just an ordinary day at the park — kids playing with one another, parents watching after their kids, sitters watching their charges, and a host of strangers lurking about.

All while young mother, Robin, sneaks off to send sext messages to her lover while she’s supposed to be playing hide and seek with her four year old daughter.

But in Dark Crossings, games aren’t for children.

And there are no winners.

The Good Deeds Society —  Something weird is happening in the gated community of Evergreen Walk. People are having dreams in which a mysterious woman appears to them, asking them to do good deeds for one another.

Soon, a group calling itself The Good Deeds Society forms, eager to spread word of the Lady and her good deeds.

But in Dark Crossings, not every good deed can be taken at face value.

And no good deed goes unpunished…

Monsters — 10-year old Sheldon Harrison is afraid of monsters.

Every day he has to walk along a long stretch of woods where a Monster is rumored to live.

But that Monster isn’t as scary as the bullies which torment him. And the only way to avoid the bullies? To take a shortcut . . . through the woods.

[…] busy on my mission with Sean Platt to become Kings of The Serial. And we’ve been writing a book a week in 2012 towards those efforts. (Which we’ve been doing pretty well at, too, thank you, […]

  2. Donna Swope

I’ve always thought it must be terribly difficult to co- write a book because people have their own opinions on how it should turn out, but you two make it look easy! I just read Yesterday’s Gone first season in a few days- but usually because my kindle battery would die or I needed to get stuff done. I didn’t want to stop reading!

    • thedavidwwright

Thanks, Donna! We appreciate the kind words. As for writing together, Sean is a great co-writing partner. There’s almost zero ego with us and our stories. Any disagreements are usually resolved by asking one question – what is best for the story? And 99.97% of the time, we agree, or come to agreement.

  3. Tracie Harding

I have just read all three seasons of yesterday’s gone. Couldn’t put them down. Amazing!!!!! Thanks and can’t wait to read all your other serials. Is there going to b a season 4 !!! And is the other world totally gone or those in lockdown in level 7 or 8 ??? Still alive

    • DavidWwright

Yes, Season 4 is coming out soon. Sorry for the delay, your comment was stuck in moderation forever and I didn’t see it until now. Thank you again for the kind comments, Tracie.

  4. Joe

When are you going to release Season 2 z2134? I loved the Yesterday’s Gone series but definitely more a fan of z2134.

    • DavidWwright

      Hi Joe,

Z 2134 will be out in a couple of months. Don’t have the exact date yet, but we’re working on it after Yesterday’s Gone: Season Four. Sorry your comment was in moderation so long without me seeing it.

  5. Mari

You guys are great! I always tend to read books that have continuations… so this format is perfect! I have read Yesterday, Whitespace, and Available Darkness. On to Fornever More! Thanks for great stories!

  6. debbie

I love Stephen King and have read everything that he has ever written! I put you right up there with him! I will NOT miss anything that you write! NOTHING! My nails are down to the quick with anticipation! Keep en coming, PLEASE! I will be buying Available Darkness 2 TODAY,

    • thedavidwwright

Debbie, Wow – thank you for the compliment! King is one of our heroes. And not just for the serialized The Green Mile. I was a HUGE Talisman fan back in the day. Hope you enjoy AD 2! Thanks again.

  7. Joanne

Just finished AD2…loved it. You guys keep getting better. Thanks for the option of of an episode a week or the whole season at once. Great idea, hope you can continue it. Thanks again.

    • thedavidwwright

Thank you, Joanne. Glad you love AD 2! And yes, we will certainly continue the season launch at the same time as the first episode. It might mean a few more Dark Crossings short stories between seasons, so we have enough time to get them all edited, but we’ll definitely keep at it.

  8. Clare

Stumbled across Yesterday’s Gone on Kobo when looking for something to read. Partway through season one I reluctantly broke off, but only to buy seasons two and three! I kept waking in the night to read just a bit more – now have bags under my eyes but have to keep going – I’m utterly gripped.

    • DavidWwright

Thank you and welcome new Kobo reader! Glad you found us, and sorry for the bags under the eyes 🙂

  9. Rea Mills

I got hooked on Yesterdays Gone when I read Season one. It is hard to put down. A great story. Keep up the good work. I am looking forward to reading the next episode.

  10. Roger

I have read every single word you have published to date and absolutely love your stories, I can’t get enough of them, please please please keep up the great work Sean and David. If you are reading this and have never read anything from collective inkwell then you are in for a reel treat, I wish I never had read any of Sean or David’s work, then I could read them all again for the first time!

    • DavidWwright

Thanks, for the kind words, Roger. I sometimes wish I hadn’t read any Calvin and Hobbes just so I can experience them for the first time again.

  11. Peter Rushworth

A friend introduced me to Yesterdays Gone and I haven’t put down Sean and David’s books since starting episode 1, just about to start season 4 so can’t wait to see what happens with Boricio(s) and the rest. In the meantime while waiting for season 4, Z1234 and Whitespace season 1 have kept me going. Z1234 has taken some critic on the reviews I’ve read on Amazon because of its similar theme to a certain other book/film, but I think that it holds its own as a great read and awaiting the twists and turns of book 2. Whitespace, just like Yesterdays Gone has left me hankering for more and will be my next purchase. Sean and David’s books have got me enjoying fiction again and have opened me up to a new world of zombies and monsters!!!!!!!

    • DavidWwright

Thanks, Peter. Glad we’re writing some stuff you can enjoy. It’s always a great feeling when you find a writer who makes you feel like reading more. For me, it was King, Koontz, and Clive Barker.

  12. Vickie

Yesterdays Gone is my favorite but I really, really like them all. I have read everything Sean and David have written, I am truly a goner.

  13. Jamie Collins

I can appreciate a good case od adhd, having it myself, but can u 2 stop creating new stories and maybe complete the ones Ive been waiting on since what seems like forever? It seems like by the time a new season comes out I’ve read so many novels in between, I have to reread the previous season to figure out what its about!

    • DavidWwright

The thing about series books is that we have to balance them with one another. Kind of like HBO, Showtime, or AMC. They rotate their shows every few months, as we do with our series. If they ran EVERY episode of Dexter or The Walking Dead straight through before starting a new show, people would get sick of the show. Or the creators would burn themselves out.

Additionally, we have to balance books that sell versus ones that don’t sell as well, so we live up to the deal we strike with each reader to not leave any series unfinished. So that means carefully selecting what book to publish next in order to sustain our business.

Following the complaint over a lack of summaries in Yesterday’s Gone: Season Four, we will be including wrap-ups in future books (or on the website) so you can quickly bring yourself up to speed when a new season goes live.

I’m not sure if you’ll welcome this as good or bad news, but we have two standalone books coming in the next two months that are NOT serials. So if you prefer to have everything wrapped up when you close the book, you may enjoy them.

      Thank you for commenting.
