How to sideload onto your Kindle Device or app

Sometimes we send out special exclusive stories to our Goners list. Here’s some instructions on how to load a .mobi file onto Kindle devices and your PC/Mac. If you’re not familiar with the process, it may seem intimidating, but it takes just a minute or two at most to learn, and you’ll probably never forget how to do it!

Right click and save the file to your computer and then transfer to the device of your choice. Or, if you have the Kindle app on your pc or mac, you can read it right there for free!

The instructions for downloading and transferring to the Kindle device are listed below. It’s super easy.

HOW TO READ ON YOUR COMPUTER

Download the mobi file to your computer.

Download the free Kindle app at the below link:

Install the app to your computer.

Once installed, find the .mobi file we sent you and double or right click on the file and it should open in your device.

Enjoy!

HOW TO SEND TO YOUR KINDLE DEVICE – THE EASIEST WAY

HOW TO SIDELOAD ONTO YOUR KINDLE – THE SLIGHTLY LESS EASY WAY

Sideloading is the process of using the USB cable that came with your device to transfer the downloaded mobi file from your computer or Mac to your Kindle device.

STEP 1

Download the mobi file.

For Windows users (and perhaps older Kindle models), you should be able to connect and skip right to Step 2.

For Mac users, you’ll first need to download a file program to share files from your mac to your Kindle Fire HD device.

http://www.android.com/filetransfer/

Follow the instructions there.

STEP 2

Connect your Kindle Fire to your pc or mac via the usb cable you received with your device.

STEP 3

Once you’ve connected your Kindle to your mac or PC, use your file explorer program to open the temporary folder marked Kindle. Open the folder where you downloaded the .mobi file in a separate window.

On the mac, you may need to click on the android icon to access your Kindle folders.

STEP 4

Locate the folder in your Kindle Fire named documents. (some Kindle models may allow you to load into the books folder, but the ones I have require you to upload into docs.)

Drag the .mobi file from the window on your computer into the documents folder.

Once done, safely eject the Kindle from your mac or PC (however you normally eject a temporary drive on your machine). When you turn your Kindle back on, the book should be loaded where your books are.

STEP 5

Read and enjoy!

You can email it to yourself if you know your Kindle’s email address. Should be on your Kindle device or on an Amazon page. And then send it to yourself.

Go to the Amazon page where you manage your Kindle, and choose Manage your devices, and you can both find your email address associated with your Kindle, AND set it up so you can send yourself stuff.

Regular Kindles also hook up to the PC via the usb cable that came with the device.

Would like to know how to add the downloaded file to the kindle app in either windows 8 or by usb connection to windows 7 phone. Thanks

Hi Nick, I’m not sure. There are eight zillion devices and therefore it’s impossible to put instructions up for each one. However, Google and YouTube have tons of tutorials for every situation and device possible if you search there.
